Hybrid work, paired with back-to-office mandates, has emerged as the prevailing model in the legal sector, reshaping how firms approach collaboration, culture, and performance.
Savills Research conducted an independent review of the return-to-office policies of Am Law 200 firms to gain insights into the 2025 workplace strategies of leading U.S. law firms.
Return-to-office policies among Am Law 200 firms:
- Hybrid models dominate: 55.9% of firms follow a flexible hybrid model, while 39.5% adopted fixed hybrid schedules.
- Office-first mandates are slowly gaining traction, now accounting for 4.0% of Am Law 200 firms, while remote-first setups have nearly disappeared (0.6%).
- In-office requirements are becoming more structured, with 82.0% of firms specifying exact days in the office, most commonly Tuesday through Thursday.
- A total of 17 firms have outlined formal consequences for noncompliance with in-office expectations, including impacts to bonuses, promotion eligibility, PTO access, and remote privileges.
